Protection was always one of my favourite songs from the Massive Attack album of the same name. For some reason the song always made me feel quite guilty about the way I had behaved with previous friends, family or even strangers. It really reinforced the importance of looking after and protecting those who are close to you.

I always thought that Tracey Thorn was talking about chivalry in these lyrics, and how it is a mans responsibility to protect his partner. But on further inspection, the video and lyrics suggest that she is referring to a father’s relationship with his child.

“Youve got a baby of your own, when your babys grown, she’ll be the one to catch you when you fall”.

Certain lyrics also point towards the woman playing a more supportive role in the relationship.

“You’re a boy and i’m a girl. But you know you can lean on me”.

So I think that the songs message can be taken universally, and probably be applied to all types of relationship.

Anyway, have a listen and let me know your thoughts.

Everything you do is a balloon is one of my favourite songs by boards of canada. The introductory melody is quite melancholy and I often find it difficult to listen to, but when the song gets going its becomes much more uplifting and positive.

For me, the song evokes a feeling of loss, maybe tied to childhood, a part of your life that is fleeting and transient. It may also refer to the fleeting and transient nature of actions / events in our lives. Once the moment has occurred, thats it - its gone, just a memory, floating off and fading away.

Mike from the band talks about this in his interview with the NMEBeing a kid is such a transitory, fleeting part of your lifespan. If you have siblings, then if you think about it, you’ll have known them as adults for a lot longer than you ever knew them as children. It’s like a little kid lost, gone”.

Anyway, have a listen and see what you think.

Text 4 Jul Song meanings, where art thou?

It seems like launching a new application is always a catch 22 situation. You need new members to create content, but you also need new content to attract members. As a result, i have been scouring the interwebs looking through artist interviews to grab soundbites to be referenced on the site.

I have found the most useful site to be pitchfork, which i full recommend, the interviews there are really good and they always seem to tease some juicy song meanings out of the artist. Wikipedia has also been pretty useful for grabbing some of the song meanings for the more popular artists.

Anyway, I will continue to flesh out the site with some lovely song meanings for you peoples, and this will hopefully attract more people towards joining the party themselves. Yes yes!
